A Woman's Place is in the House
While still warm in the afterglow of the Democrats regaining power in
the Congress for the first time in 12 years and freeing this country
from the choke hold of a one-party system, it has become clear that the
230 odd year struggle for having a woman at the helm of the U.S. House
of Representatives (still only twice removed removed from the Presidency,
but a victory nonetheless) will still be belittled by some. Not for what she
can do but simply by her gender.

I wonder how tolerated comments about fried chicken and watermelon would
be if Barack Obama should become elected as our first black president?
Never mind his intelligence and capabilities. I assume outcries
regarding such deplorable commentaries would rightly emerge, such as
they did in in regards to the ad campaign against Harold Ford, Jr.
Although somehow missing in the observations of the distastefulness of
said ad, was the fact that not only was it racist, but it was sexist as
well.
It never ceases to amaze me just how little our society has grown when
it comes to how we look at others. Particularly when it comes to our
elected officials, I prefer that we look deeply into ethics that they
hold dear and what deeds are done within the power that they wield
rather than the physical description stated on their driver's license.

Glad to see another local activist on the blog scene. I agree that Pelosi making Speaker is great, but I hope that she has the courage to do the people's will. We need a hero, and it would be great if that hero was a woman.
As I mentioned on last weeks Equal Time, the gender of the Speaker doesn't matter to me as long as she/he can get the business of the people done. Some say Ann Coulter is a woman and I don't think she/he would do a very good job as Speaker.
As for limpbaugh, he is so full of bullflop he has stretch marks.He is boring and predictable. You ALWAYS know what he's going to say, and how he's going to say it. What happened Thursday, has NOTHING to do with estrogen, it was the American people telling him, bush and ALL republicans that they have HAD it with their endless,bloody war for profit, their corrupt,perverted congress and corporate profit uber alles mentality.BUT as usual, bush thinks he can raise his pathetic poll ratings by killing more of our troops and Iraqis, limpbaugh thinks that by attacking a woman, we will denigrate the Democratic majority.The deafness that limpbaugh brought upon himself by eating Oxi like Kix seems to be contagious.
I agree with both of you. I'm holding out hope that this Speaker will serve us much better than her predecessor, but she should be held accountable should we be given more of the same. I have already been disappointed that she would announce that impeachment is off the table. I don't think that should ever be the case. No one is above the law, regardless of what office they hold. However, I'm still willing to give her the opportunity to show that to be her biggest folly and regardless of the outcome, her performance is what should be scrutinized, not her gender.
